RE-UP: David Bowie live in Moscow 1996 - 1DVD - June 18

David Bowie - Moscow, 1996-06-18, audience dvd

Kremlin Palace Concert Hall, Moscow

Author: steve23yh
Video Source: audience
Lineage: received in trade on a compilation DVD, also see notes
Menu: yes
Chapters: yes
Transfer Rate: 7mb/s
Format: PAL / 25fps
Audio: Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Number of Discs: 1
Disc Type: DVD5
Total Running Time: 1:25:09

Notes: Received in a trade on a disc entitled Bowie_In_Moscow.  This comprised the audience recording (here), the pro-shoot from TV, a TV retrospective from Cafe Oblomov, three clips from outside the gig (also here) and some Iggy vids!  Over four hours in total, and not too tidily compiled.

Ripped everything with DVD shrink and recompiled using Ulead Movie Factory.

While I'd thought it was a complete audience recording of the gig (and it's more complete than the pro-shoot), it's only complete up to The Man Who Sold The World.  From that point on, it seems that the cameraman is either running out of tape or battery, as the songs start getting clipped.  Hallo Spaceboy is completely missing, unfortunately.

Contents:

Concert:

1. The Motel
2. Look Back In Anger
3. Scary Monsters
4. Diamond Dogs
5. The Heart's Filthy Lesson
6. Outside
7. Aladdin Sane
8. Andy Warhol
9. The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)
10. The Man Who Sold The World
11. Strangers When We Meet

14. Lust For Life
15. Under Pressure
16. Heroes
17. White Light/White Heat
18. Moonage Daydream
19. My Death
20. All The Young Dudes

Extras:
Three clips from outside the gig, seemingly from outside Bowie's hotel, at the press conference and then the cameraman and friends just mucking about in Red Square.

Sourced from the excellent Tarquin blog ) in the very brief period between it being loaded and Megaupload being taken down!
Stated to be DAT master (presumably Tarquin's own).

Only fix was to remove five loud digital bangs from the end of Starman.

Notes: video quality is not too good, for it's dark, but quite acceptable. Good close ups of Bowie and the band.
Sound quality sucks for the most part, but sometimes it is decent...could be improved by some willing soul.
There's a very annoying distortion on low frequencies.
The quality is overall really not too good, but the atmosphere is GREAT. Bowie was inspired and very much at ease,
doing something that he evidently enjoyed very much.

Info: Tao Jones Index is the name David Bowie and his band used for the drum'n'bass segments of their live shows on the 1997 "Earthling" tour.
He played a full set under this name in the Phoenix Festival dance tent. It's a pun based on his own real name (D. Jones) and his bond offering
that he made earlier that year.
Tao, a Chinese character pronounced "dow," not only stands for the Chinese equivalent to Bowie's first initial, "D", but also has heavy religious
implications through its correlation Taoism, therefore contributing to the religious overtones of "Pallas Athena."
Bowie and band played in the Radio 1 Dance tent as Tao Jones Index, with no spotlights on David.
Instead they performed in darkness with dry ice and strobe lights.

Set List: (as performed)

Notes: during the first two songs the video quality is quite bad, but after that it increases.
The sound quality is bad, there is a constant buzz, that you could reduce either hearing in mono
or lowering the mid high frecuencies with the equalizer (6K and 12 K).

Info: this is a great Sound+Vision Tour gig. The TV broadcast didn`t included all the songs, but you can enjoy them in the audio of the show. Bowie did a lot of acting in several moments. It was the first time Bowie was in Chile, so it has a special place in my heart.

NOTES FOR VERSION 2.0

Everything is the same for V2.0 except the following:
The sound track is now stereo and the dub is almost perfect, the source used for the audio was the CD uploaded here some time ago and also a FM broadcast I had on tape for some time, the reason I had to use two different sources is that the sound did not match the CD on 2-3 tracks [Ashes/Blue Jean and I think Panic in Detroit] there was some editing on the TV pic as the Ashes intro on the CD was longer than the TV sound, it was a labour of love to sort out but well worth the work and a big improvement I think. I have added a basic menu, where there was white noise at start of 'Space Oddity' I have added a short title effect. The advert is still in but with 'Sound and Vision' start played over it. Hope you enjoy it Goa !!!!

Source: Audience Sound Quality: CCC1/2 Art Work: CCC

The complete show but the sound has too much bass and distortion to get 4/5.  Just before the encore Bowie asks 8000 people to tell him their christian name.........'Carlos, right?'.  Well, it made me chuckle.  100% Welsh production.

This is Volume 6 of 6 DVD’s straight from the vaults of the NBC. A total of over 10 hours of recordings from the 1980 Floor Show of which only a mere 45 minutes were actually released in the US. The recordings include dance rehearsals, song rehearsals and much more. These DVD’s contain very rare live performances from David that have never been released in any other form ever before. Bowie's performance on Saturday the 19th October, went on for over 10 hours as each song was performed and filmed over and over. Because of the small size of the Marquee, only two cameras were able to film and so each song was shot, as many as five to six times, to allow for camera re-positioning and the overall satisfaction of Bowie and the film crew. The whole thing was, according to Bowie later, "shot abysmally." The fans, of course, loved the fact that they got to see their hero perform many times over. During the intervals between takes, and despite having just recovered from a recent bout of influenza, Bowie laughs and jokes with the audience and signs autographs. This DVD set is absolutely 100% authentic and a must for every David Bowie fan. The DVD's are recorded region free. All six DVDs make up more than 10 hours from The 1980 Floor Show (The Midnight Special).

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Hollywood 1995 - 2CD - October 31

David Bowie
Hollywood Palladium
W. Hollywood, CA
October 31, 1995

A "Blackout" Production

Description: Received this in a tape trade back in 1995, so it's probably very low generation.  This show of course is somewhat legendary, being a Halloween gig and the first of the Outside Tour without Nine Inch Nails.  This show suffers from some issues, notably overmodulation in places and microphone problems, but this version might be the best available?  To me, it's very listenable, not on par with some of the others but decent and full sound, not the "one star" ratings I have seen.

Please comment and let me know what you think whether this is the standard version or some sort of upgrade.  Watch out for Nite Flights as there is quite a bit of "mike scratching" during the intro/takeoff.  Download and trade freely!!

Notes

Tape flip between Station To Station and Young Americans:
cuts right into Bowie's link, but restored this from Arcorman version of same gig.

Gap between Young Americans and Suffragette City (seems to be encore break) - removed with no ill effect
Another encore break gap between Heroes and Stay - removed, only crowd noise.

Fix notes:

The first 6:40 or so on this recording was over-saturated.  About 15 seconds into Rebel Rebel the taper clearly realised this, as there were two seconds of extreme quiet followed by a realistic level for the rest of the recording.

I cut the oversaturated section and ran it through the declipper function in iZotope RX, which restores the wave peaks.  It was successful.  I then restored this to the start of the recording and fixed the two ultra-quiet seconds in Rebel Rebel, in Goldwave, as best as I could.  Pretend you don't know I did it, and you won't notice anything!

Tape flip between Ziggy and China Girl, so beginning of China Girl is clipped.

NEW: David Bowie live in New York 1997 - 1DualLayer - January 9 - pro-shot

David Bowie + Guests
Madison Square Garden
New York, New York
January 9, 1997

DOUBLE LAYER NTSC DVD

Video: 720x480, 6600kbps, 4x3 NTSC 29.970fps
Audio: LPCM 48kHz 16bit 2ch stereo

3 sources were used to make this dvd
- high-bitrate video transfer from prerecord vhs to 2 dvdr
- Coca-Cola Planet Live cds
- 50 Dead Dogs cds

Video files from the two dvdr were cut and joined with Womble's MPEG-VCR. CloneDvd2 was used to transcode the original joined video file from 7.5GB(~8000kbps) to 6.3GB(~6600kbps). This size reduction was done to provide enough space on a DL dvdr for the video, pcm audio and some buffer to allow for a smooth layer transition.

Audio was upsampled to 48kHz and synched to original audio. Tracks 1-24 are from the Coca-Cola Planet Live cds, tracks 25 and 26 are from 50 Dead Dogs cds. Some audience noise and a small bit of stage chatter was patched with the original audio. Original .ac3 audio converted to .wav with Headac3he, all other audio work done with AdobeAudition1.5.

Menus made with Photoshop

Authored with SonicScenarist2.7,  layer break set at chapter fourteen, 1h06m50s

I recommend burning with ImgBurn on +R DL media, setting the layer break at the position noted above.

Tape flips between Let's Dance and Stay; and Heroes and Changes - crowd noise only or no impact.

Sound quality deterioration from Changes is on the tape - taper position?

David Bowie Live in Philadelphia Spectrum 13.07.1990

Received this tape as 2nd Gen in a trade many moons ago I can't remember who from, not a brilliant recording but probobly the best around.
Bowie does a lot of talking and also says for the last time in Philadelphia for this one' then the band go into Ziggy Stardust. Bowie starts 'Queen Bitch' buts stops it after a few mins saying that he dont like that one then goes into White Light White Heat
Great stuff. This is a RAW rip no volume increases or anything

Label: CD-R
Audio Source: audience

Total running time: Disc 1: 56:32; Disc 2: 55:15

Info: Fairly typical Sound+Vision tour recording, with good sound (I'm rating it 8½).
Otherwise, the thing this gig's most notable for is the guest appearance of Bono on Gloria.  Clearly with it being audio, you can't detect a mullet and you have to assume endless leather-clad arms punching the air the entire time!

Bowie does a lot of talking and also says tonight it's Panic in Cleveland not Detroit.
The 1st Gen tape cuts off after 3mins of The Jean Genie, but I have added a full version from a second source of inferior quality as a bonus.
This also includes 55 seconds from the soundcheck also has a bonus track.

21. Modern Love

Length: 92:57

Notes:
This show is from the Sound + Vision tour. The tour at the time was billed as a greatest hits tour with the intention of not performing the songs again once the tour was over. This show features an interesting moment during Fashion which Bowie stops the band half way through the song and after a minute or so of talking to the audience decides that they should play Queen Bitch. Once Queen Bitch is done they start Fashion again from the beginning playing it up until the end on the second go round. The other oddity is that a few setlist regulars are missing; Suffragette City, Fame and Heroes. According to Sean this is the full show and full recording.

Whole tape running substantially too fast, by around ¾ of a tone.  Reduced by a factor of 92%.
The faffing about with levels at the start is on the original (and stops around a minute into Space Oddity), otherwise, sweet.

Here is a 1st gen Hi Fi VHS transfer of Maddog's recording of the first night of the David Bowie Denver appearance of the Sound and Vision tour. I am personnally not a big Bowie fan, but I am uploading this show by request. I believe Maddog was sitting in the second row of the second floor section for the show - about half way back. Sound quality is pretty decent.

Notes

Tape flip during Let's Dance - successfully matched
Gap removed at 5:43 in Stay - difficult to spot any impact
Tape flip between Suffragette City and Fame 90.  Fade on source tape, so joined during fade.  Sound is more subdued from Fame 90.
Gap between Heroes and Pretty Pink Rose (encore break) removed - crowd only.
