RE-UP: David Bowie live in Paris 1995 - 1CD - November 12 - soundboard

David Bowie
Le Bastille, Paris, France
12 November 1995

MTV show, stereo.

01 Look Back In Anger
02 The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction
03 Under Pressure
04 The Man Who Sold The World
05 Hallo Spaceboy
06 Strangers When We Meet

This is a great, true stereo recording!

The only change was a re-cut of the edits between the last three tracks. The start of  Spaceboy was halfway through Bowie's song announcement. There was also a blip in Bowie's announcement, sadly I couldn't do anything about that, but it does not affect the music. Also the synth at the start of Strangers When We Meet was clearly heard at the end of the edit of Hallo Spaceboy.

Aside from that I made no changes as the sound is as near perfect as these recordings get, and I was very glad to get this - thanks to the fan who kindly offered it up (as a CD-R).  The other recordings on the CD (Ouvrez Le Chien) were four rough mono live recordings from a month later (duplication of the songs here) and a mono London 95 (which has been bootlegged in true stereo).

This is an excellent quality mixing desk recording, that I have widened the sound image on, using Audacity.

The Hearts Filthy lesson suffers compared to other versions dues to the method of recording (ie mixing desk),
however other tracks like Hurt and Nite Flights sound particularly good here.

David ends the show thus :

"Thank you, on behalf of Trent Reznor and the Nails, myself and my band, god bless, thank you very much hope you had a good evening"

Dat master clone from the JEMS archives. This one captures Bowie' stop on the Sound+Vision tour in Atlanta. RE-UP: David Bowie live in Lyon 1987 - 2CD - June 28

David Bowie
'Lyon 1987'
Location : Lyon, Stade de Gerland
Date : 28th June 1987
Artwork : Yes

Description : The first Bowie show I saw on that beautiful Sunday evening of June '87...
The first part was played by a french group from Lyon called Kent who was very well received,
singing some funny songs for what I can remember.
Bowie waited for the night to come on stage, and the stadium wasn't what we call a hysterical one... Very calm...
Some had come just curious to see the Bowie show they had so much heard of on the French Tv and on the radio...
Others had come with small kids on their shoukders, and I knew some people who were only there to see Frampton on stage !!!
There were evidently some old true fans too with their Ziggy T-shirts and finally me with my newly bought black beautiful T-shirt too.
I was somewhat deceived at the time by the stadium atmosphere : no massive screams from the audience, just claps here and then...
Years later, I have now a bit of nostalgia about that night, knowing how lucky I was to see a show of that tour.
For the encores , with 'Time', I can remember I was searching desperately Bowie on stage till I finally found him when I saw everyone looking at the top of the Spider !
A great moment for a great song, never to remember !
There exists at least 2 recordings from that night, as there was a guy just behind me who was recording the show too with his small tape recorder...

Notes

Miles too fast.  Speed correction with factor of 92%

Cut in crowd noise between Golden Years and Fashion.  Tidied up.
Gap removed between Red Sails and Breaking Glass (probably former tape flip).  Crowd noise only.
Volume boost, Breaking Glass - China Girl: 25% to bring in line.
Couple of minor sound fluctuations in crowd noise between Cat People and China Girl - removed.
Gap in tape @ 4:07 in China Girl (perhaps an old tape flip).  Removed with fade-out/in, but some music missing.

Tape flip between China Girl and Scary Monsters - crowd noise.
Small gap in crowd noise on fade of White Light/White Heat removed.

After Cracked Actor, appears that a radio advert or something similar played over the PA.  Left alone.
Gap removed @ 4:41 in Fame.  Minor loss of music.

Have seen listing indicating that TVC15 was between Fame and Star, but absolutely no evidence here.

Notes

Way too fast.  Speed adjustment @ 94%.

Hiss removal has been done using iZotope RX2 denoiser.  Still some sound on first few tracks, but believe these are arena ambient noise, not tape hiss.

Some volume rebalancing in places, as volume was rather variable.

Apparent join between Life On Mars? and Sorrow - on source tape, left alone.
Strange gap between Scary Monsters and Rebel Rebel removed - no impact.
Gap @ 1:37 in Rebel Rebel: some music lost
Tape flip between Rebel Rebel and White Light White Heat - seamless

Gap in crowd noise @ 16 seconds into Station to Station removed.
Tape flip between Young Americans and Fame - seamless

Gap (encore break) between TVC 15 and Stay removed.  Audience noise only.

Hiccup in crowd noise between The Jean Genie and I Can't Explain (6:23) removed.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Osaka 1978 - 2CD - December 6

David Bowie
Koseneinkin Kaikan
Osaka, Japan
December 6, 1978

Mick Ronson OGWT April 1975

Very good audience recording
Running time: 1:59:08

This is all quite complicated so please bear with me and pay attention. I received this tape in a trade in the late 70's, of the 45+ 1978 shows I had at the time it was one of my key favourites due to it's wonderful quality and performance. Unfortunately the tape was one of those awful C120 two hour tapes and one day my tape deck decided to eat it.
After carefully extracting the remains I was horrified to find the sound had become dull and warbled. In disgust it was thrown in a box and has lain untouched for 25+ years.

Upon finding MWP 18+ months ago, I thought that this would be a great show to re-aquire, I couldn't find it anywhere on the tracker so I started raving on about this great recording and making requests. I got very little response from anyone, then Blackout started his uploading marathon and he graciously agreed to upload his version, warning me it was not great in fact barely better than average for the tour.

I eagerly downloaded his torrent and dug out my tape for a comparison, this opened a whole new can of worms, It sounded completely different and by that I mean a different show! Upon further investigation we realised the first part of his upload was infact the 7th and not the 6th, the second half was the 6th and the same source recording but as he warned the quality was far from great.

This did however have one benefit I found that halfway through Heroes my tape burst back into life and only the first 1½ tracks were damaged, something I had never checked all those years ago.
It was now Chrisnathou's turn to play his part, he very kindly uploaded his "Isolar 2" boot of this show on HC, again the same source recording and only average at bestbut it did give something to compare. Upon close examination it was obvious it had also been heavily EQ'd in the past to produce the CD's.

I was getting nowhere fast but I had one more chance. The Bassman site described a second boot of part of the show "Reaction" as "The sound quality is excellent, and is recorded from Japanese FM. Hot stuff!" (didn't believe the FM bit but more about that later) I thought perhaps this is the quality I'm after and asked Andreas who had put this on MWP in the past if he could re-upload it. This he promptly did, the quality was much better, it too had been heavily EQ'd in the past prior to production of the LP to remove the hiss so much so that the audience had virtually disappeared so I couldn't decide if this was from the same source or not, nevertheless I got devious and set to work.

This upload therefore is as follows: Warszawa has been EQ'd to brighten it up (still warbles but still 100% better than the Isolar 2 version), The first section of heroes (2 mins 33 secs) is from the "Reaction" boot remastered so the sound matches the rest of the track (as best as my limited ability will allow) and to be honest the join is smoother than I could possibly have hoped for and trust me it's a lot better than a warbleing Heerooeesss. From the second half of Heroes to the end of the show is pretty much a raw transfer from my tape with no EQ work or hiss removal.

The only work I did was to balance the volume between tracks and channels, tidy any clicks etc and remove 2 or 3 very small skips (these are also on the Isolar 2 boot and probable come from the mastertape).
If one of you has a low gen copy of this show that is equal or better in quality, please do your duty and upload it so this show can take it's rightful place as one of the best recordings of this fabulous tour.

The late great Mick Ronson "strange choice of bonus tracks" I hear you cry. A bit of fun really and Very simple, they were on the end of the tape, completely forgot they were there so I thought why not? The quality was diabolical and they were barely audible, I used every trick I know to improve them, the purists amongst you would probably have a heart attack if you knew what I did. The sound is still a bit harsh but quite listenable, I've never seen these on another tracker so probably new to a lot of you. There will definitely be better versions out there and the video probably, If you have either I would love an upgrade.

Finally, the fabled "FM Broadcast", before Pimm's book in the early 80's I had never heard of this, in fact I have never met anyone who claims to have this recording. I may be wrong but I find it very hard to believe that a FM broadcast of Bowie from this period in of all places Japan would not have been recorded by dozens of people and be one of the commonest boots of the tour. Personally I think it was nothing more than a wind up over a very good audience recording. If you can prove me wrong please do.

Notes

iZotope RX2 denoiser tool to dehiss.

Running too fast - speed correction with factor of 92%

Fair bit of rebalancing of volume levels, which were all over the shop.
Cuts out at end of Stay.  Gap before Waiting For The Man removed with fades.
Cuts out end of Waiting For The Man.  Gap removed.
Cut between Panic In Detroit and Diamond Dogs.  Cuts into the latter, slightly.
Tape flip @ 43 seconds into Rebel Rebel.  Join is clean, but sound quality on second part is initially poorer than the start.

Also on the same tape was the Linus Band set, allegedly from a couple of days later.
I toyed with including this, but decided not to for two very good reasons:
1. Generally agreed that it's a fake, and Bowie's not present on the recording, and
2. It's absolute shit.

A Japanese double CD with the well known rehearsal in complete and in very good sound quality! Just like the other Japanes issue called RAWMOONREHEARSALS. I'm not sure which one of those two discs that was released first, but the cover of the other issue is more attractive than this one. The sound quality is the same on both discs though. A nice release!

Great piano sound!

Despite any initial appearances, this is not the afternoon show. The same people that recorded this show recorded that one, and in true wide stereo too. I do know of a better version than the bootleg version of that, which I am tracking down.

I have done some widening of the sound, that I feel has worked very well : it's always a compromise between clarity and power, I tried a few different mixing techniques (it's in Audacity, and it always involves trial and error), and I'm happy with the final result I reached.

10 Drive in Saturday

I first heard the ending of 'Drive in This Saturday' on the end of a Bowie bootleg tape - it had been recorded over and the ending was all that remained - back in the early 90's, and I was amazed!
I played it over and over again.

A little later again I was pleased to purchase a recording from the off master tape from a tape collector / trader.

Unfortunately I lost or lent out my tapes of this show a long time ago, and have sadly not been able to replace them.

This is being shared from a minidisc recording as despite several polite requests I have not been able to track down the pre CD-R version of this show. Many of the CD-Rs of Bowie shows are badly afflicted with diginoise and artefacts, and not always from the best sources. The minidisc back ups are all I could find after much searching.

This still sounds magnificient in my opinion though, thankfully!

There is some beautiful playing on this - listen to the piano on Sweet Thing and Changes!...and the organ on Changes, and Rock and Roll With Me is amazing too!

Drive in Saturday, as previously alluded, is amazing, but unfortunately cut in the middle part. And what an enchanting intro Width of a Circle has! One of the best on the whole tour...?

The stereo balance is not perfect - I did my best to correct it a little in Audacity, bringing up the gain in the left or right channel.

I have tacked on the end my own 'mix' of the afternoon and evening version of 'Watch That Man' and 'Drive in Saturday', as both had cuts in the middle.

Particularly bearing in mind the dropouts in All the Young Dudes, and the cuts in Watch That Man and Drive in Saturday, I'd be very interested in what any semi professional could achieve in mixing this gig. I spent 2-3 hours on repairing dropouts and stereo image imbalances (in particular on Space Oddity) alone.

I have enjoyed working on this and listening to it immensely.

I hope you enjoy this too.

Thanks to everyone involved in the recording and performance of this show! In particular David Bowie and his band -

Mike Garson (piano, mellotron), Earl Slick (lead guitar), Herbie Flowers (bass guitar), Tony Newman (drums), Pablo Rosario (percussion), David Sanborn (alto sax, flute), Richard Grando (baritone sax,
flute), Michael Kamen (electric piano, moog, oboe), Geoff McCormack and Gui Andrisano (backing vocals).

Volume reshaping throughout (particularly on Detroit tracks - some of which probably came from the "Chicago" tape) running too fast, speed adjustment @ 94%

Repair to start of Diamond Dogs, which had been appended to the end of The Jean Genie, in turn at the end of side 1 of the tape.
Break during Rock'n'Roll Suicide @ 2:47.  Fade-out/fade-in, but left rather than repaired.

RE-UP: David Bowie Lewisham 1973 rehearsal & part of the gig - 1CD - May 24

David Bowie
Lewisham Odeon
24 May 1973

Very good quality recording - rehearsal + part of gig

01 Mick Ronson guitar
02 Medley rehearsal
03 Intro
04 Hang onto Yourself
05 Ziggy Stardust
06 Wild Eyed medley
07 Moonage Daydream
08 Changes
09 Space Oddity

This is from a tape I was told was the master, or lowest gen recording. The rehearsal circulated despite
being told I was getting something that hadn't been distributed at the time I got this, but I'm not sure
the gig has?

The last I read on the topic is that the gig recording that circulates is average quality, but the
recording here, while incomplete, is a lot better than that - it's very clear indeed.

12 Rock N'Roll Suicide

This is the recording of the show where David fainted at the end, shocking the audience.

One thing that is particularly interesting, to me anyway, is the leap in quality on reaching side 2
of the tape here - Aladdin Sane onwards. Often there are small differences in fidelity upon turning
over tapes - for example, sometimes one side will have more hiss than the other, as somewhere in the
copying someone has switched the dolby off or on. The difference here is more pronounced than that.

Prettiest Star is a highlight here!

Rock and Roll Suicide had to be combined from two sources of this recording...but then this does have the long ending with the audience's reaction to David's fainting.

It is a copy of Bowie live at The Rainbow Theatre 19-8-72 and is the only known recording of "The Ziggy Stardust Shows" with the Lindsey Kemp mime troup, so it's historical significance to Bowie fans is enormous.

This is what Bassman has to say about this recording:

"COMMENTS: In August '72 Bowie staged a couple of special shows known as
"The Ziggy Stardust Shows", including the Lindsey Kemp mime troup
and a specially built stage. This is a release of the only known tape of one
of these shows. The sound quality is so-so, but it doesn't matter.
The tape ends in the beginning of MOONAGE DAYDREAM, and I'm sure that at
least ROCK'N'ROLL SUICIDE was played too? .................A great Australian release"!

The BBC stuff although on the artwork of my discs wasn't included, it is just the show.

As always with cdr recordings you can never vouch for the source material used.

Soundwise with a bit of tweaking with a grahic equaliser you can actually get this sounding
very good indeed. The good thing about the recording is it doesn't fluctuate so your ears adjust
to the sound very quickly.

The recording is a bit thin on the bass, however you can here Bowie's voice quite clearly in front of the mix,
and the band are balanced in the back ground.

Don't get me wrong this is not of the standard of Santa Monica or Hammersmith Odeon
but it is still very pleasant to listen to.

9. Amsterdam
10. Andy Warhol
11. I Feel Free
12. band introductions
13. Moonage Daydream
14. White Light/White Heat
15. Suffragette City

Notes

iZotope RX denoiser to remove hiss.
Volume reshaping throughout

Ziggy Stardust, some dodgy bits on first 20 seconds or so of left channel.  Copied from right channel.
Small break between Song For Bob Dylan and Changes.  Removed.
Thunk during guitar chord just before Starman removed.
Tape flip between Space Oddity and Amsterdam - edited together.
Someone talks over the left channel (not at gig, after the event), in applause between Space Oddity and Amsterdam, so right channel copied over.  Four small gaps in applause also removed.
Strange repeat bit at 58 seconds in Amsterdam, removed.
Gap between Andy Warhol and I Feel Free removed.
Moonage Daydream 2:59-3:11 left channel depressed - copied right channel over to compensate.
Some swirly hiss, briefly, after this repair, that can't be accessed to remove.
Tiny gap in crowd noise before Suffragette City removed.
Messy bit (with some duplication) with gap @ 3:01 in Suffragette City removed.
Gap in crowd noise after Suffragette City removed.

Seven or eight instances of strange sound a little like a camera shutter over the music - Goldwave Pop/Click tool on default setting used - mitigates if not completely removing the sound.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Preston 1972 - 1CD - June 4

DAVID BOWIE - Preston 1972-06-04

12. Amsterdam
13. I Feel Free
14. Moonage Daydream
15. White Light/White Heat
16. Suffragette City
17. Waiting For The Man

Notes

iZotope RX denoiser used (one pass on side 1, two passes on side 2) to remove hiss.
Annoying whistle all the way through side one.  Nuked the frequency of 8,685Khz, ±150Khz to remove.
Volume boosted on Space Oddity, Andy Warhol and Amsterdam by 25%.  Volume also boosted at end of side 2, from the encore break, and then also again from around 2 minutes into Waiting For The Man, where the volume was dropped for no apparent reason.
Join between Amsterdam and I Feel Free.  Nothing lost, but sound quality change, as I Feel Free has brighter sound.
Momentary drop in volume just before Suffragette City is on the tape.
Gap removed from Suffragette City @ 2:27 - broadly OK, but sound quality changes after.
Fix @ 5:10 in I Feel Free with small gap removed - minimal impact.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Hemel Hempstead 1972 - 1CD - May 7

David Bowie
Pavilion, Hemel Hempstead, UK
May - 07 - 1972

This show is one of the most sought after. It was rumored to be around in "certain circles" for quite a long time and only one song was open to a wider public until now: Gotta Get A Job. So I was really excited when I got it in a trade not so long ago.
The show itself is really great and soundwise it is close to the Kingston Polytechnic from one day earlier.
It is a bit annoying that there are cuts between the songs but there always things to complain about. It's simply another great document of the early Ziggy phase with powerful versions of Moonage Daydream (David shouting all his passion out) or Waiting For The Man with a mind-blowing guitar solo of Mick Ronson.
Also he performs some tracks only present in the early Ziggy phase like I Feel Free or Gotta Get A Job/Hot Pants.
I have attached a really nice cover I found on the Bowiesleeveart web page. Unfortunately no longer publically accessible.
