RE-UP: David Bowie live in Brussels 1976 - 2CD - May 11

David Bowie - Brussels 1976-05-11

Vorst Nationaal, Brussels

Audience recording
Number of discs: 1
Artwork: included
Total running time: 86:53

Track listing:

01 Station To Station
02 Suffragette City
03 Fame
04 Word On A Wing

09 Five Years
10 Panic In Detroit
11 Band Introductions / Changes
12 TVC 15
13 Diamond Dogs
14 Rebel Rebel

Fix Notes:

This recording had intrusive rumble.  I removed this using the denoiser tool in iZotope RX, which nicely removed a modicum of hiss from the higher ranges.
Tape flip during Five Years (Earth was really...opera house).
Note that the muffled sound during Station To Station and following the tape flip in Five Years is on the source tape.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Zurich 1976 - 2CD - April 17

David Bowie
Hallenstadion, Zürich, Switzerland
April - 17 - 1976

Matrix of 2 different audience recordings from the same show

Both recordings were incomplete as both had several cuts and have quite distinctive differences in sound. As a result of the matrix
the sound is very balanced between frequencies.
To adapt the single bits from either one or the other tape to the overall sound some EQ was necessary. Also I lifted the bass and treble of the combination a bit.

As always the biggest challenge was the differences in speed of both tapes. As usual with such old recordings (and gens) the speed was inconsistent within each track.
So it took quite a while to fix this. I was orientating the speed towards version 2.
Version 1 has some problems with higher levels in sound and so also the matrix is suffering from this a bit.
The concert as such for me sounds very committed. David is in very good mood and after the band introduction he states: "...you are the audience ...and I am David Bowie"
MossGarden has again made some very nice artwork using a photo of Bowie from the trip he went on from Zürich to Moscow the day after the concert which you can find attached here.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Berlin 1976 - 1CD - April 10

David Bowie - Mit einem Mädchen vom Bahnhof Zoo
10 April 1976
Deutschlandhalle, West Berlin, East Germany

Label: unknown
Audio Source: audience
Number of Discs: 1
Artwork: not included
Total running time: 78m 06s

Notes: This release is a mix of two recordings.
Info: The title of the release comes from the fact that a young junkie from Berlin, the heroin of the book Wir, Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo went to this concert (although the book states that the date was 18 April - what is clearly wrong, since there was only one Bowie's concert in Berlin in 1976, and it's this one). The book was the thing that made me a fan of Bowie's music.

Tracklisting :
01 - Station to Station
02 - Suffragette City

Notes

Single pass of iZotope RX denoiser for hiss.
Sundry tweaks to volume, which was very variable throughout.
Running too fast.  Speed adjustment on all tracks to Rebel Rebel with factor of 96%; The Jean Genie speed adjustment at 92%.

Tape flip @ 3:32 in Five Years - fade-out/in, small amount of music lost
Gap (presumably encore break) between Diamond Dogs and Rebel Rebel - removed and smoothed out.
Gap (and virtual fade to zero) between Rebel Rebel and The Jean Genie.  Removed and tidied.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Los Angeles 1974 - 2CD - September 4

02 It's Gonna Be Me
03 Space Oddity
04 Future Legend
05 Diamond Dogs
06 Jean Genie
07 Rock'n'Roll Suicide

I feel this is a significant improvement on this recording...it's still a little on treble-y side,
but muting treble frequencies does suppress nuances in the music so aside from adding a little more
bass I didn't do much there. I gave it a fuller sound as narrow mono can sound pretty awful in
headphones, and I listen to gig recordings in headphones for the most part.

There are some good performances here, in particular It's Gonna Be Me, Space Oddity and Rock 'n' Roll
Suicide...hopefully you will like it too.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Tokyo 1973 - 1CD - April 20

David Bowie
Shibuya Kookaldo,Tokyo,Japan
20th April 1973

EX quality recording (sounds stereo?)

01 Intro
02 Hang On To Yourself
03 Ziggy Stardust
04 Changes
05 Moonage Daydream
06 John I'm only Dancing
07 Watch That Man
08 The Jean Genie
09 Time
10 Five Years
11 Let's Spend the Night Together
12 Starman
13 Suffragette City
14 Rock'n'Roll Suicide
15 Round and Round

This is definitely one of the best quality Ziggy era recordings...a few higher quality recordings have gradually surfaced over the years, but this isn't far off the His Master's Voice recording for quality.

My only issue with it in comparison to that fantastic bootleg and other recordings of the era is this sounds less exciting than some of the other shows of the era. DOn't get me wrong, it's a good show, of course, it just sounds like it's lacking something compared to the best shows, perhaps tour fatigue (similar set, month after month) was sinking in.

The gig? The audience clap along to the intro, and BOwie really holds the ziggy 'playyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeed" note! Things do pick up for Watch That Man, I feel, very good performance there. Good performance of Time, and there seems to be a couple of minor skips or edits in there, but as it's slightly murky (it's excellent quality overall but there is a little 'murk' to the recording still) I have not tried to repair that, partly because with some repairs the work involved isn't justified by the result, and I also felt that could be the case here. This is a good point to say that despite this making it to a factory pressed CD, it does have a couple of CD-rot related issues...presumably the factory CD was mastered from an early /
partly rotted CD-R? None of these 'issues' are particularly noticeable for 90% of the recording...there's the occasonal very light click but aside from that it's all well and good. However things set in during the encore, Round and Round. This is a shame, as in my opinion it's *the* biggest highlight here...not everyone rates the song, but I think it was great live, a really fun way to end a show. It's a great recording and performance of the song, considerably marred by clicks. I did once try to track down a clean version of this, but with no luck. I have done my best to repair it...most of the mix here - a simply widening of the stereo picture - was relatively light work but I've tried Click Repair and manual repair of the noises
in Round and Round. It doesn't sound so bad now.

Five Years is a very good performance, a shame there's the odd effect of the cd issues, but again these are minor at this stage. I suspect this recording could be a slightly re-worked tape (there stereo sound isn't necessarily from the original recording? Having done a bit of widening of sound it's quite possible to do reasonably good sounding 'stereo-ish' sound)...
it would be interesting to see if anyone has an 'untouched' tape of this show and maybe start afresh? However like I said 90% of this sounds fine.

Nice piano in the background on Starman, and moog too!

This gig has some nice moments and great playing despite the above reservations, so enjoy!

Notes

OK, this one's a little different.  Ruud upped the version of this from the double silver on 13th Feb 2009; which in turn was taken and torrented on dime by tvc15_it two years later (which is where I got it from).

Immediately I listened to it, I was taken by what good quality it seemed to be, but hidden under an unbelievable layer of thick hiss.  Out came iZotope RX denoiser tool.
Sure enough, it's very clear underneath the murk.  Hint of tidal sound on first side (eccentric tape at some stage in the past), but it's beautiful on side 2 (Width Of A Circle onwards).

This is a direct copy of my 3 disc cdr entitled "2002-10-02 Ressurection" Live Hammersmith Odeon London UK, where David Bowie makes his emotional return to the Hammersmith Odeon on 2nd October 2002. Not much else I can say about this other than it's one of the best recordings to emerge from the 2002 tour.

This is an excellent Audience recording, which I would rate at Ex+ or 8/10.

This disc has a good mix of old and new material.  This is the first time the Bewley Brothers was played live in a theatre, to a paying audience and also this disc has a fantastic version of Moonage Daydream at the end of which Bowie grabbed a black and silver tinsel boa that someone had thrown on the stage and wound it round his neck. "I left it last time I played here," he joked. "I found it under a chair". On listening to Moonage Daydream this is as close as it can get to sounding like, "The Spiders From Mars" without it being them!

Bowie also says before "Moonage Daydream" "Not only is this the last song of the night, but it is also the last time we will ever play during this fucking tube strike!". The encore then lasted a further 9 songs!

Some Mic noise at the start as I put the hat on...it goes away in about 35
seconds...The 9 seconds of Space Oddity were played in order to show the audience how the stylophone sounds. "I Feel So Bad" and "One Night" were played as a tribute to Elvis Presley's death 25-years-ago. This was the last night of the Area2 festival with Moby Headlining. One of my favorite recordings ever. Bowie was on, the sound was pristine for the Gorge, and such a great setlist.

Info (from N.Pegg's The Complete david Bowie): Two of the few summer concerts in 2000 (Bowie's last engagements since his child was to be born soon).
These are the two warm-up gigs on 16 and 19 of June at New York's Roseland Ballroom. The Band consisted of David Bowie  (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica), ), Mark Plati (guitar, bass guitar), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass guitar), Earl Slick (lead guitar), Mike Garson (keyboards), Sterling Campbell (drums), Holly Palmer and Emm Gryner (backing vocals and percussion).
The BowieNet members only show on the 19th June (which was free and exclusive to BN subscribers) also featured guests Dennis Davis joining the backing on percussion for two songs and Thomas Dolby (keyboard and vocals) for one.
A third show on June 17 was called off at two hours' notice when Bowie found he was unable to sing, having contracted laryngitis.
The Bowienet show was attended by Iman, Duncan, Susan Sarndon and various members of The Cure. The Band was joined for the encores by Thomas Dolby, and also in attendance was Bowie's veteran drummer Dennis Davis.

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Paris 1995 - 1CD - November 12 - soundboard

David Bowie
Le Bastille, Paris, France
12 November 1995

MTV show, stereo.

01 Look Back In Anger
02 The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction
03 Under Pressure
04 The Man Who Sold The World
05 Hallo Spaceboy
06 Strangers When We Meet

This is a great, true stereo recording!

The only change was a re-cut of the edits between the last three tracks. The start of  Spaceboy was halfway through Bowie's song announcement. There was also a blip in Bowie's announcement, sadly I couldn't do anything about that, but it does not affect the music. Also the synth at the start of Strangers When We Meet was clearly heard at the end of the edit of Hallo Spaceboy.

Aside from that I made no changes as the sound is as near perfect as these recordings get, and I was very glad to get this - thanks to the fan who kindly offered it up (as a CD-R).  The other recordings on the CD (Ouvrez Le Chien) were four rough mono live recordings from a month later (duplication of the songs here) and a mono London 95 (which has been bootlegged in true stereo).

10 Teenage Wildlife

This is an excellent quality mixing desk recording, that I have widened the sound image on, using Audacity.

The Hearts Filthy lesson suffers compared to other versions dues to the method of recording (ie mixing desk),
however other tracks like Hurt and Nite Flights sound particularly good here.

David ends the show thus :

"Thank you, on behalf of Trent Reznor and the Nails, myself and my band, god bless, thank you very much hope you had a good evening"

RE-UP: David Bowie live in Lyon 1987 - 2CD - June 28

David Bowie
'Lyon 1987'
Location : Lyon, Stade de Gerland
Date : 28th June 1987
Artwork : Yes

Description : The first Bowie show I saw on that beautiful Sunday evening of June '87...
The first part was played by a french group from Lyon called Kent who was very well received,
singing some funny songs for what I can remember.
Bowie waited for the night to come on stage, and the stadium wasn't what we call a hysterical one... Very calm...
Some had come just curious to see the Bowie show they had so much heard of on the French Tv and on the radio...
Others had come with small kids on their shoukders, and I knew some people who were only there to see Frampton on stage !!!
There were evidently some old true fans too with their Ziggy T-shirts and finally me with my newly bought black beautiful T-shirt too.
I was somewhat deceived at the time by the stadium atmosphere : no massive screams from the audience, just claps here and then...
Years later, I have now a bit of nostalgia about that night, knowing how lucky I was to see a show of that tour.
For the encores , with 'Time', I can remember I was searching desperately Bowie on stage till I finally found him when I saw everyone looking at the top of the Spider !
A great moment for a great song, never to remember !
There exists at least 2 recordings from that night, as there was a guy just behind me who was recording the show too with his small tape recorder...

Notes

Miles too fast.  Speed correction with factor of 92%

Cut in crowd noise between Golden Years and Fashion.  Tidied up.
Gap removed between Red Sails and Breaking Glass (probably former tape flip).  Crowd noise only.
Volume boost, Breaking Glass - China Girl: 25% to bring in line.
Couple of minor sound fluctuations in crowd noise between Cat People and China Girl - removed.
Gap in tape @ 4:07 in China Girl (perhaps an old tape flip).  Removed with fade-out/in, but some music missing.

Tape flip between China Girl and Scary Monsters - crowd noise.
Small gap in crowd noise on fade of White Light/White Heat removed.

After Cracked Actor, appears that a radio advert or something similar played over the PA.  Left alone.
Gap removed @ 4:41 in Fame.  Minor loss of music.

Have seen listing indicating that TVC15 was between Fame and Star, but absolutely no evidence here.

Notes

Way too fast.  Speed adjustment @ 94%.

Hiss removal has been done using iZotope RX2 denoiser.  Still some sound on first few tracks, but believe these are arena ambient noise, not tape hiss.

Some volume rebalancing in places, as volume was rather variable.

Apparent join between Life On Mars? and Sorrow - on source tape, left alone.
Strange gap between Scary Monsters and Rebel Rebel removed - no impact.
Gap @ 1:37 in Rebel Rebel: some music lost
Tape flip between Rebel Rebel and White Light White Heat - seamless

Gap in crowd noise @ 16 seconds into Station to Station removed.
Tape flip between Young Americans and Fame - seamless

Gap (encore break) between TVC 15 and Stay removed.  Audience noise only.

Hiccup in crowd noise between The Jean Genie and I Can't Explain (6:23) removed.
